A man self-immolated outside a New York courthouse where Donald Trump's hush money trial was being held.
NBC News and other US media reported early Saturday morning that the man had died. NBC News reported that New York City police said the man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities earlier said a man in his late 30s was in critical condition.
New York City police said the man, identified as Max Azzarello of St. Augustine, Florida, did not appear to be targeting Trump or anyone involved in the trial.
Witnesses said the man took a pamphlet from his backpack and threw it into the air, then doused himself with liquid and self-immolated. One of those pamphlets included references to “evil billionaires,” but the portion viewed by Reuters witnesses made no mention of Mr. Trump.
“Right now, we're labeling him as some kind of conspiracy theorist, and we're going to move away from that,” Police Department Deputy Commissioner Tariq Shepherd said at a news conference.
A Reuters witness said the smell of smoke wafted through the square shortly after the incident, and police sprayed fire extinguishers onto the ground.
A large crowd of protesters and onlookers gathered at the heavily policed downtown Manhattan courthouse on Monday, the first day of the trial, but the crowd has since thinned.
