Tampa, Florida-Tampa Bay Lightning goalkeeper Andrei Vasilevski won Bolt’s Series Clinch Game 4 on Monday night against his state rival Florida.
“Big Cat” stopped all 49 shots he faced as Tampa Bay defeated the Panthers 2-0 and helped finish the four-game sweep in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
“It’s pretty cool to play with a player who goes down as the best goalkeeper I’ve ever played,” said Lightning forward Alex Killone.
It was Vasilevsky’s sixth series-Clinch Shutout, the most goalkeeper to date.
“He was there, Wassy,” added Lightning captain Stephen Stemkos. “Like he was always in these big games.”
“That’s the way to evaluate a player’s performance in a big-time game,” Kiron said. “He was just awesome.”
The high-scoring Panthers averaged the NHL’s top four goals per game during the regular season. However, Vasilevsky and Tampa Bay’s defense, who blocked 77 shots in the series, scored a total of three goals in four games.
“The whole series is literally hard-working boys to stop constant block shots, sacrifices and pucks,” Vasilevsky said. “This great effort by everyone on our team. It’s not just me. I’m just trying to do my job.”
Vasilevsky started this postseason by allowing more than three goals in the first six games against the Toronto Maple Leafs. But head coach John Cooper said his confidence in the team’s Wassy has never been shaken.
“I don’t know if there’s much more I can say about him,” Cooper said. “It’s funny that the playoffs are five games in the Toronto series. You’re asking all these questions about what’s wrong with Vasilevsky. I’m shocked.”
“My job is to give the boys a chance to win,” Vasilevsky said. “We did a pretty good job doing that.”
Lightning has advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals for the third consecutive year.
