Hector Santiago created Sunshine Woodworks from Berne’s garage about five years ago. He has sold games like Cornhole and Jenga to people all over Texas.

Boerne, Texas-Hector Santiago’s business came from his backyard and his garage. There he chops wood, customizes his backyard game choices, and finishes the carefully crafted piece.

“I needed more to do in the backyard, so I went online … I learned how to make a Genga set and a washer set,” said Air Force veteran Santiago.

Santiago created Sunshine Woodworks from his home in Berne about five years ago. Since then, he has sold games such as Cornhole and Jenga to families and businesses throughout Texas.

“Cornholes, washers, jumbo jenga, rudder balls, yardgies, hooks and rings … that’s also pretty popular,” he said.

People are ordering games that start at around $ 45, but they are so big and heavy that there is no shipping cost. He said they often coordinate trips to the San Antonio region depending on when their orders are ready so that they can pick up the game directly. Santiago also sells several off-the-shelf games at the Bernet Trading Company on 222 South Main Street.

“Everything is made to order,” he said. “They tell us what they want, and it’s a 25% deposit to place your order, and then as soon as everything is done they just pay the balance at pick-up.”

Santiago’s hobby soon turned into a family business when others began to notice what he made. He started advertising on social media and the rest was history. It also became a collaborative effort for his children to participate.

“My son likes to come here. He likes to help me. I don’t know if he’s cutting a tree or painting. He likes to participate. He likes to participate. I’m 10 years old now, but I’m a little disciple. “

Santiago hopes that Sunshine Woodworks will lead to a bright future for his son and daughter, and perhaps he will be able to take over the business to his son.

“Hopefully, as he gets older, I can teach him more about business and how to build,” he said.
