The White House said in a statement Friday that Vice President Kamala Harris will visit Singapore and Vietnam next month to strengthen relations and economic relations between the United States and the Indo-Pacific region.
Harris is the first US Vice President to visit Vietnam, and the top executives of the Biden administration will visit the Indo-Pacific and throughout Asia. The Indo-Pacific is the region between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, adjacent to Japan, India, and Australia.
This visit comes when the administration is working to strengthen regional relations with Southeast Asian countries while at the same time pushing back China’s influence in the region and the world.
“President [Joe] Biden and Vice President Harris have made it a top priority to rebuild global partnerships and keep the country safe, and this visit will continue to do so and deepen its involvement in Southeast Asia, “Harris senior adviser said. The White House did not provide travel date details. It will also serve as Harris’ second international trip after a visit to Guatemala and Mexico in June as part of a diplomatic effort to address the root cause of immigration to the United States.
According to the White House, Harris will meet with Singapore and Vietnamese leaders to discuss regional security, climate change and the coronavirus pandemic. She will also discuss joint efforts with leaders to “promote a rules-based international order.”
