Three people, including a 21-year-old man, were also arrested for attempted murder.
Patrick Nakahara is still distrustful after graduating from Youth Challenge Academy on Thursday night, saying he heard a rapid gunshot right next to Thomas Square.
He and his family were there to congratulate his daughter’s friend
“After graduation, it was when everyone came out of the Youth Challenge Academy,” Nakahara said. “As we crossed the street from Blazedel to Thomas Square, we observed one group (of people) in one group on the left on the right side of the highway.”
He said the two groups were cursing each other.
After a while, he said the battle had happened. That’s when things get out of hand.
“I saw one person fall by the wall, reaching out and just starting to fire. All we heard was that all the bullets were fired.” He explained. “And the direction they shot was where my son was, so I ran and checked them.”
Nakahara chased the suspect after realizing that his children and grandchildren were okay.
“When (the suspect) walked away like nothing and wasn’t shooting a gun, he showed me that he didn’t care, so I seized the opportunity,” he explained.
He chased Nakahara to William McKinley High School, which is his last memory.
“During the investigation, I found out that I was beaten from behind. When I got off, someone tried to kick me into my face,” he said. “I don’t remember any of them.”
He said he was taken to a hospital where he had multiple tests. He was released with a concussion a few hours later.
Captain Parkerboard confirmed that two men, 17 and 18 years old, were arrested for assault.
KHON asked Nakahara if he would chase the suspect again.
“If my children were (at risk) their lives re-engaged, yes, with a heartbeat,” he said.
“Maybe I wasn’t thinking right, maybe I shouldn’t do what I did, but my first intention was to help,” he said. “You can’t shoot a one-year-old kid or baby and run away with it. If I can stop you, I’ll stop you.”
According to police, the firearm has not yet been found.
“But the suspect’s car has been confiscated and an investigation warrant is pending,” Board said.
Police also said the stray from the shooting struck a passing vehicle. Fortunately, the occupants of the vehicle were not injured.
