Virginia Beach, Virginia (WAVY) — A couple in Virginia Beach was convicted of selling counterfeit coupons that cost retailers and manufacturers more than $ 31 million.

According to the Ministry of Justice, 41-year-old Lori Ann Talens and her husband, 43-year-old Pacifico Talens, run a scheme to find and sell groups of coupon enthusiasts using social media sites such as Facebook and Telegram. I did. Counterfeit coupons from around April 2017 to May 2020.

Talens ran this scheme from his home in Virginia Beach and used a computer to design, create and create a variety of counterfeit coupons that were “virtually indistinguishable” from real coupons.

This scheme was discovered when one of Talens’ customers reported to the Coupon Information Center (CIC), a federation of consumer goods manufacturers specializing in coupon integrity.

CIC officials purchased coupons from Talens, confirmed that they were counterfeit, and contacted the US Postal Inspection Office for further investigation.

Authorities executed a search warrant at home after identifying the couple as the source of the counterfeit coupon.

During the search, the agent confiscated a $ 1 million worth of counterfeit coupons from his home. According to officials, Tarens’ computer also contained images of over 13,000 individual counterfeit coupon designs. CIC reviewed these images and concluded that counterfeit coupons cost retailers and manufacturers about $ 31,817,997 million.

The two pleaded guilty to postal fraud in April. Lori Ann Talens also pleaded guilty to transfer fraud and medical fraud. Pacifico Talens was sentenced to more than seven years in prison on August 19. Lori Ann Talens was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
