Traffic may be redirected and some roads may be closed due to traffic volume

Virginia Beach, Virginia (WAVY) —Virginia Beach City expects more traffic than usual on the weekend of the holidays of July 4th.

Residents and visitors are advised to arrive early for oceanfront events to minimize traffic congestion. Drivers traveling in the late afternoon and evening hours should expect high density traffic.

Drivers should also be aware that pedestrian traffic is heavy.

The I-264 East Exit on South Bird Neck Road and the West Exit on First Colonial Road may be closed on Monday, July 4th. From 7:00 pm on July 4, city officials said I-264 could redirect eastbound vehicles to westbound. Due to heavy traffic, Parks Avenue as needed.In that case, the detour may take place until 11:30 pm

Shore Drive and Ruskin Road routes to the oceanfront are still open.

A fireworks display will be held on Oceanfront and on July 4th at Mount Trashmore, Virginia Beach. Visitors need to arrive early.

Fireworks are illegal in the city.
