Virginia Beach, Virginia (WAVY) — Due to controversial policies, some people at Virginia Beach are planning a rally outside the school board on Tuesday night.
The board will discuss the ban on school property and weapons at school-sponsored events.
Bringing weapons to school grounds is already a violation of federal law. The proposed policy extends its ban to include places where employees are present to perform duties outside school board meetings or school grounds.
“This particular policy is poorly written, poorly thought out, bad, not permanent, and will not stand up to scrutiny,” said Vincent Smith, who lives in Virginia Beach. Said.
Smith, a city official who manages construction and surveying, is the proponent of the Second Amendment to the Constitution. Smith told 10 On Your Side that he would speak to members of the board at a meeting on Tuesday night.
“I spent a lot of time claiming the safety of local government employees. Many people think I’m just a gun nut, but the truth is I work in Bill 2. It means that it was. [May 31, 2019 mass] photograph happened. To be clear, I wasn’t inside the building when the shooting happened. I was near the emergency operations center on campus, “Smith said.
He said that the proposed measures by the school board to designate buildings or assets owned or leased by the school board, where employees exist as gunless zones, have some gray areas. Say there is. The proposal on page 1 lists school-sponsored events as gunless zones, but does not mention any of them.
“This policy does not say where these exemptions exist. Even if someone comes to the school board building and has a firearm in the car and it is unloaded. Do they violate this policy if left in the car, “Smith said.
10 On Your Side contacted a member of the Virginia Beach Board of Education for comment, but did not respond.
NS The policy is presented for the first reading during the Tuesday night meeting A place where voting can take place with sufficient support from the board of directors.
