Norfolk, Virginia (WAVY) — A Virginia Beach tax filer was sentenced Monday for his role in fraudulent and false tax filing.
From 2013 to 2016, 42-year-old Ryan Daretze acted as a “ghost preparer,” according to court documents. That is, he received the money as a paid preparer, but was unable to report or identify the customer’s return.
According to those same documents, Dalletezze routinely claimed false exemptions for customer returns such as education and operating costs, energy credits, and business losses.
Authorities said his customer was unaware of the fraud, and Dalletezze continued to make large refunds.
According to investigators, filing these false and fraudulent tax returns resulted in over $ 291,000 in tax losses.
Dalletezze was sentenced to two years in prison.
