Virginia Beach, Virginia (WAVY) — Virginia Beach has a new place for young people to hang out.
The new Woodstock Skatepark is located on Providence Road, just off Interstate 64.
It’s a skate park, but it’s not just about skating. The park has two purposes and also helps the local environment, especially when there is a potential for flooding.
The city hoped to work with the Hampton Road Sanitation District on this project to help flood the storm-related sewers every time the weather gets worse.
“This isn’t the makeshift backyard slope that Dad built in his backyard,” said Chad Morris, Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation Planning, Design, and Development Manager.
For the youngest users, skateparks are fresh and fun.
“It’s very smooth. No one is on it. It’s very fluid,” said park skater Liam.
Ted Henifin, general manager of the Hampton Roads Sanitation District, called the park an “environmentally twisted skatepark.”
“We put intermediate, beginner and advanced features in the skatepark and we hoped it would be of great benefit to everyone in the wheeled sports community,” Morris said.
“And it’s really, really nice concrete-like-it’s so smooth,” Lliam said.
Henifin said skateparks would benefit more than just area skaters.
“Of course, people will come here, and all they’ll see is a skatepark. They’re not really going to understand what’s behind us in that tank. This is a skatepark. It’s a 5 million gallon wastewater storage facility hidden underneath, so it’s a big community benefit and environmental contribution at the same time, “he said.
Henifin added that the project will help maximize the funding invested in infrastructure.
“The idea of getting multiple profits from every dollar we invest in is exactly what it is … why the community does something they can see, do and enjoy as a profit. Shouldn’t we get it? “He said.
“This is the best skatepark ever. You have to come skating. Take your butt off the couch and come skating in the park,” Liam said.
