Lexington, Kentucky (LEX 18) —The 8th Annual Sports Art Auction brought total sales of $ 1,625,945 to the Keeneland and Lexington Crossgate Gallery on Sunday.

The event is a collaboration between two organizations, featuring 188 outstanding sports art pieces from around the world.

Keeneland’s sales pavilion is usually lively, with hundreds of bidders arriving at the site to participate in the auction. However, the 2020 Sports Art Auction was effectively held for COVID-19.

“It’s obviously more fun if we can meet more people in person, but I hope this really works,” said Carlyle Berkeley, gallery director’s assistant.

The auction took place on Sunday between 12:00 pm and 5:00 pm. Bids can be online, by phone, absentee ballot, or pre-arranged.

Gallery director Bill Men said the digital platform has created a unique challenge for art lovers.

“It’s an art, you really need to see it in person, and it’s hard to explain things directly to someone they can’t get close to,” Men said.

The best-selling artwork was the 1973 watercolor painting Beyond the hill Painted by American artist Andrew Wyeth. It sold for $ 109,250.

Keeneland will donate the proceeds from the auction to a non-profit initiative. LexArts and the Central Kentucky Art Community will also benefit from auction sales.
