Honolulu (KHON2) — A 33-year-old visitor from California died after the first respondent noticed that he was unresponsive in the waters near Wainapanapa State Park.
At around 4:42 pm on Thursday, police, firefighters, and medical personnel responded to reports of a man falling into the sea 20 feet below.
According to Maui police, the man was standing on a cliff.
The rescue team lost sight as the high waves and strong tides prevented him from being quickly regained, and the tides pulled the man under the sea and underwater.
After an aerial flight and a search of about 1 hour and 15 minutes, firefighters were able to find him about 30 feet below the surface.
No lifesaving measures were taken when the man was brought to the shore because the paramedics determined that the man was already dead.
Preliminary investigations suggest that there were no signs of fraud, but investigations are ongoing.
An autopsy is scheduled.
