Stephen Neil, who represented North Long Beach in the city council from 2010 to 2014, was elected chairman of the Waterfront Commission of New York.

The five-member committee that set the Port of Long Beach policy elected Sharon Weissman as Vice President and Bobby Olvera as Secretary. The Board of Directors elects three positions each July for a one-year term.

“Last year, the Port of Long Beach overcame an unprecedented pandemic and continued to drive the products that returning Americans urgently needed,” Neil said in a statement. “We look forward to working with colleagues, staff and executive director Mario Cordero to make this port the best commercial gateway for decades to come.”

Neil is the Chief Pastor of LIFE Gospel Ministries and co-founder of the Economic Policy Impact Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting financial opportunities for working families, representing District 9 while in the city council.

Previously, Neil was a board member of the Long Beach Transit and Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network. Mayor Robert Garcia appointed Neil to the Commission in 2019 with unanimous council approval.
