‘We deliver hope’: Meals on Wheels begins work on $10 million facility in south Tulsa | Local News – Tulsa, Oklahoma

Tulsa, Oklahoma 2021-07-20 22:47:31 –

After agreeing to lead a fundraising campaign for the new building, lawyer Betsy Jackson went to see the CEO of Meals on Wheels at the group’s former headquarters in eastern Tulsa. But she got lost.

“I didn’t see it. Jackson said Thursday morning when Meals on Wheels began construction at a new $ 10.75 million facility in southern Tulsa.

“That’s something that doesn’t happen in this building,” Jackson said.

Both location and architecture will give Meals on Wheels more visibility into the city, she said. The new 24,000-square-foot building is located on three acres near the bustling intersection of 51st Avenue and Ale Avenue, opposite La Fortune Park, where you can’t miss the glass front and colorful exterior panels.

The organization began 50 years ago by delivering half a dozen meals to a handful of trapped seniors, officials said. Since then, it has served about 15 million meals, making it the largest non-profit home delivery program in Oklahoma, officials said.

Still, it can be overshadowed by other organizations, said Sarah Hansel, director of Hall Estil Law Offices and chairman of the Meals on Wheels of the Metro Tulsa Advisory Board. ..

“It was Tulsa’s best-protected secret in the non-profit world,” Hansel said. “But I don’t like secrets.”
