Council Bluffs, Iowa (KMTV)-West Broadway is an important link between downtown Omaha and Council Bluffs, and reconstruction is finally nearing completion.
“Phase 5 requires a complete rebuild of the roads, sidewalks and storm drain system from 19th to 15th Avenues,” said civil engineer Dave Vermilion.
Mayor Matt Walsh says the refurbishment was quite late.
“The West Broadway hasn’t been rebuilt since the late 1940s. Every year we put a layer of asphalt on top of it, which lasted a couple of years,” Walsh said.
According to Vermilion, this final stage was one of the busiest intersections in Council Bluffs, and it took a lot of effort to develop a step-by-step plan.
“It’s finally time to close, and it’s also important to put up traffic control signs so drivers can change routes under construction,” Vermilion said.
Walsh is confident that improvements will polish the city.
“There are special amenities, special traffic lights, special street lights that you can see in the first four phases and extend to the fifth phase,” Walsh said.
The Iowa West Foundation has partnered with the city through all five phases since 2017. Brenda Mainwaring, President and CEO, is anxious to complete.
“When talking about a five-year project for road construction, it’s inconvenient at first. People think it never ends. You’ll see it gradually take shape.” Said Mainwaring.
Mainwaring sees progress paying off.
“I really understand what the concept was to make this a really attractive entrance to the city,” Mainwaring said.
