El Paso County, Colorado — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has warned residents about the increasing theft of catalytic converters.

According to the sheriff’s office, thieves are becoming more brave and stealing daytime catalytic converters from cars parked on the owner’s driveway.

“The metal hidden in the catalyst is more valuable than gold,” EPSO wrote on Twitter. “Inside the catalytic converter is a ceramic element coated with various precious metals such as platinum, rhodium and palladium.”

With that in mind, what can you do to protect your property?

Call for all suspicious activities. If you find any doubts, please report them. If you are in El Paso County, which is not incorporated, please report it to EPSO and provide a security video. The video helps the sheriff’s office track patterns, trends, suspects and their vehicles. The phone number is (719) 390-5555.

Another helpful tip: stay away from the darkness. If possible, park in the garage or in a bright place.

Finally, engrave VIN # on the catalytic converter. If the catalytic converter does not have identification information, it is an even bigger target because it makes it easier for thieves to sell later.
