KOIN, Oregon — Portland’s Summer Music Festival is back, including a celebration of the survivors and descendants of the lost city of Vanport.

Since it started in 2017 Vanport Jazz Festival He brought some of the top smooth jazz and R & B artists to Portland while showing off his local talent. This festival is a homage to the lost city of Vanport, where the Portland International Raceway is now located.

Vanport was built by Henry Kaiser in the early 1940s to accommodate shipyard workers who built warships during World War II. Many are blacks from the South, representing the largest influx of African Americans in Oregon’s history.

The devastating flood of 1948 wiped out Vanport, Oregon’s second largest city at the time. However, the floods failed to wipe out the culture that Vanport residents brought when they moved to the Albina district of northeastern Portland.

“When the floods struck in 1948, we saw a renaissance of music in the city of Portland,” said James Taylor, a relative who grew up in Vanport. “It is very important for us to continue this heritage.”

The pandemic canceled the Vanport Jazz Festival in 2020, but most ticket owners refused refunds and instead chose to hold their tickets in anticipation of the festival’s return.

“Come to listen to live music and it’s just exhilarating,” Taylor said. “The music they say nourishes the soul!”

Known for her collaboration with Prince and the classic “Glamorous Life” of the 1980s, Sheila E. will be the star of this year’s festival. Other artists include Gerald Albright, Marion Meadows, and Portland jazz singer Tahira Memory.

The 4th Vanport Jazz Festival will take place on Saturday, August 7th at the Colwood Golf Course in Boulevard, North East Colombia. Tickets can be purchased online.
