Atlanta (NewsNation Now) —The White House Coronavirus Task Force will hold a press conference Thursday afternoon, the day after the United States recorded more than 250,000 coronavirus deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Earlier Thursday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it would recommend that Americans not travel during Thanksgiving holidays next week to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the event of a nationwide outbreak of the virus.
A CDC official, Henry Walk, said in a phone call with reporters Thursday that travel recommendations were “strong recommendations” and not required. Government agencies said many states across the country have made recommendations after experiencing a surge in cases of coronavirus in recent weeks.
“I’m amazed at the rapid increase in cases, hospitalizations and deaths,” Walk said.
The CDC advised not to gather with people who do not live in the same household for at least 14 days, the incubation period of the coronavirus. Officials also said they have posted recommendations on their website on how to stay safe during the holidays for Americans who choose to travel.
Thanksgiving and Christmas are usually the busiest times of domestic travel, as Americans meet with friends and family all over the country. Shares of airlines and hotel companies plummeted from the beginning of the outbreak as civil servants advised against unnecessary travel.
Vice President Mike Pence will meet with the Task Force before the briefing. NewsNation will live stream the briefing at 4 pm Eastern Standard Time.
