Washington — According to an official briefing on the issue, the United States is spending more than $ 3 billion on the development of antiviral drugs for COVID-19.

Tablets are used to minimize post-infection symptoms.

They are under development and may begin to arrive by the end of the year until clinical trials are complete.

At a briefing on Thursday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, a top infectious disease expert in the United States, said the White House had positive results with a new program, like a similar program the government launched to fight HIV and hepatitis C. He said he was “very optimistic” that he would produce.

Funded through the COVID-19 Stimulation Package, which President Joe Biden signed the law earlier this year, he said the program will further fund research on existing therapies and discover new therapies. He added that funding would be included.

“Vaccines clearly continue to be the centerpiece of the weapon against COVID-19, but … antivirals add a line of defense against mutant strains of concern,” Fauci said.

News of the administration’s plans for pills was first reported Thursday by the New York Times.
