The World Health Organization has extended its call for a moratorium on Covid-19 booster doses, at least until the end of the year.
WHO Previously urged world leaders The booster effect will be postponed until the end of September.
“Since then, there has been little change in world affairs, so today I want to extend the moratorium until at least the end of the year so that at least 40% of the population can be vaccinated in all countries.” WHO Executive Director Tedros Adhanom Gebreyes said in a briefing Wednesday.
According to the WHO, about 5.5 billion vaccines are given worldwide, 80% in high- or middle-income countries.
“I’m not silent when the companies and countries that control the global supply of vaccines think that the poor people in the world should be satisfied with the leftovers,” Tedros said.
Almost 90% of high-income countries are vaccinated at least 10% of their population, and 70% of high-income countries are vaccinated at least 40% of their population. “No low-income country has achieved either goal,” Tedros said. “It’s not their fault.”
“High-income countries have promised to donate more than a billion doses, but less than 15% of those doses have been achieved,” Tedros said. “Manufacturers have promised to prioritize COVAX and low-income countries.”
The Executive Secretary said the WHO has sought the fairness of vaccines since the start of vaccine deployment, which should not happen after the care of the wealthiest countries.
“I don’t want any more promises, I just want the vaccine,” Tedros said. “We have the tools. It’s clear what needs to happen. It’s time for true leadership, not an empty promise.”
