Frankfort, Kentucky (LEX 18) —This week, Governor Andy Beshear announced his intention to reward essential employees for working throughout the pandemic.

“Something you can call a reward or a hero bonus,” he said on Monday.

Some of the planning details are very simple, such as where the money comes from. Beshear wants Congress to spend $ 400 million from the American Rescue Plan for these bonuses.

However, other details are still unknown. For example, it is not clear who is eligible for this bonus and how much they will receive.

“There will be many decisions,” Bescher said Thursday. “There is a lot to tell.”

Regarding the amount included in the bonus, Mr. Bescher said it depends on the number of qualified people. He wants to make as much money as possible, but says eligibility is determined by whether an employee has worked through work and a pandemic.

“A two-year pandemic for the same job or the same employer,” Bescher said.

Eligibility depends on the essential worker status that Bescher says is defined in the American Rescue Program.

“We talk about it as being at the forefront, providing essential services, having a lot of interaction with the general public in the meantime, and / or processing what has passed,” Bescher explained. ..

The governor says it’s safe to say that healthcare workers, teachers, and grocery workers should be on the list. He definitely believes there is something else to be included.

“Sure, I think open manufacturing facilities are essential. We need to talk. We need to talk about farming. I think we need to talk about hygiene,” says Bescher. “Our people keep our power grid running, so I think we need to talk.

But he admits that there are some jobs left behind. He used the state government as an example, stating that state soldiers and health workers should be qualified, but some office workers should not.

“We have a few other jobs. There are people in my office who don’t always offer vaccines that shouldn’t be included,” Bescher said.

“And now everyone in my direct office is angry with me,” he joked.
