Wichita, Kang (KSNW) – A breach of privacy, that some Wichitas said they were happening while they were sleeping. So far this year, police have reported more than 2,800 reports of car theft, nearly 80 in the past week.
People said the neighborhood was usually safe in the dark, but they were catching a visitor trying to steal from the car with a camera and breaking the window.
“I just wanted to share it just to let someone know if I had the car outside. I’ll see if anyone can get in the car,” says Jeff Bartlett.
Captured by the camera, Jeff Bartlett said people were coming to his West Wichita neighborhood to find easy money.
“My console, dash, and everything was thrown around the truck. It’s usually pretty good to leave nothing valuable there, but I had a camera and some other personal belongings. “Bartlet said.
After submitting a police report, Bartlett added a camera to his driveway and caught someone just a day later.
“Around 3 am, there was a warning that someone was passing through the neighborhood and checking the car,” Bartlett said.
This time the door is locked and I hope my neighbors don’t forget to do the same.
“Now we need to add different types of cameras, and we’ll be thinking more about security,” Minge said.
Jamie Minge lives in Delano. She said her husband had put her son to sleep a few weeks ago when she heard the glass shatter. That was when he called the police.
“They told us that there were about 6 other phones in the neighborhood in the last 35-40 minutes of our phone,” Minge said.
“Just checking out the people’s ring video, it seems like it’s happening all over the town. It doesn’t seem to matter what area of town it’s happening,” Bartlett said.
According to Wichita police data, October was a busy month with reports of theft. So far, there have been 65 more car theft reports this month than in September.
