The hot and dry weather on Sunday added to the challenges facing California firefighters fighting to prevent further invasion of flames. Ancient sequoia grove, Where the root of the tallest tree in the world was Wrapped in protective foil..
Fire officials have warned that strong winds are contributing to a “serious fire condition” in the area of the KNP complex, a fire that struck two lightnings that merged on the west side of Sequoia National Park in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Until Sunday, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a fire alarm warning that gusts and low humidity could create conditions for the rapid spread of wildfires.
Historical droughts associated with climate change make it difficult to fight wildfires California 1 person. Scientists say climate change has made the west much warmer and drier, more extreme weather, and more frequent and destructive wildfires over the last three decades.
According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire, more than 7,000 wildfires broke out in California this year, damaging or destroying more than 3,000 homes and other buildings and burning far more than 3,000 square miles of land.
Last week, a fire forced the evacuation of Sequoia National Park, along with some of the Three Rivers in the hills of about 2,500 people. The crew has smashed the line between the fire and the community. Over 34 square miles of forest area is blackened.
The National Park Service said the flames reached the westernmost tip of the giant forest on Friday, burning a group of Sequoia known as “four guards” indicating the entrance to 2,000 grove.
Firefighters wrapped the roots of General Sherman’s tree, along with other trees in the giant forest, in a type of aluminum that could withstand high heat. The four guards received the same treatment. Fire spokeswoman Katie Hooper said it was not clear how those trees were carried.
According to the National Park Service, General Sherman’s tree is the largest in the world in volume, at 52,508 cubic feet. It is 275 feet high and has a circumference of 103 feet above the ground.
Hooper said the firefighters, who had wrapped the roots of the redwood in foil and wiped the leaves and needles from the floor around the trees, had to flee on Friday. They returned on Saturday and improved conditions to continue working and launch a strategic fire along the Generals Highway to protect the Giant Forest Gloves.
Giant sequoias are adaptable to fire and can help them prosper by releasing seeds from the corn and creating clearings that allow young trees to grow. However, the extraordinary intensity of fire caused by climate change can overwhelm trees.
“If a fire burns in a tree, it will die,” said John Wallace, chief of operations section at the KNP Complex.
The fire broke out in several orchards, including trees 200 feet and 2,000 years old.
In the south, Windifier grows to 28 square miles at the Tree River Indian Reservation and Giant Sequoia National Monument, where it burns on Sequoia’s Peylon Grove, threatening others.
The fire also reached the Long Meadow Grove, a national monument with 100 giant sequoia trails. Fire authorities could not determine how much damage was done to the remote orchards.
