Wildlife Rescuer Warns Homeowners About Spiked Wrought Iron Fencing Killing Deer – CBS Sacramento – Sacramento, California

EL DORADO COUNTY (CBS13) – In the Sacramento area, dozens of deer are trapped, stabbed, non-survivable and killed by common types of backyard fences each year.

This is common in rural communities. The deer is trapped in fencing and entangled. However, rescue teams said that only one type of fence was always deadly to animals. It is a wrought iron with a sharp tip.

“It’s always deadly. Deer can’t survive a skewer,” said Dave Cooke, a fawn rehab at Sierra Wildlife Rescue.

Many of the babies Cook helped were orphaned because their mother tried to jump over the spiked fence, but it didn’t work.

“The deer come in and quickly become skewered, kicking, screaming, and tearing their stomachs,” he said.

This happens more often than you think. Cook says he receives dozens of calls a year about deer skewering on his own.

“People are angry that they didn’t expect this to happen,” Cook said. “Usually, adult deer should be able to jump over high fences, but they can slip and land if the ground is not level or chased by predators.

If this type of fence is already in place, Cook says there are some simple solutions.

“Even if the bar is welded to the top, the wrought iron fence still looks great,” he said.

Cook told law enforcement officers that the security aspects of these fences were overvalued. Humans can scale them fairly easily.

Cook wants homeowners to be considerate.

“If you like animals, it’s very hard to see, because it’s something you don’t need,” he said.

So what do you do when you see a stung deer? Cook said local wildlife rehabilitation should be done immediately, especially if the deer is female, as they may be pregnant or have deer hiding nearby. It was.
