67% of Oregon citizens say abortion is very or to some extent important in voting methods

Portland, OregonPortland Tribune) — It’s too early to know for sure how the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Roe v. Wade case will affect the 2022 elections in Oregon.

The June 24 ruling protested state-wide and urged many Democratic elected officials to promise to protect their right to abortion. However, 2017 Oregon law already guarantees unlimited abortion rights.

Abortion can be a major issue in the competition of the Governor of Oregon. There, two candidates, Democrat Tinacotech and non-affiliated Betsy Johnson, face the right-to-life Republican Christine Drazan.

The same applies to the 5th Parliamentary District. There, Abortion-right Democrat Jamie McLeod Skinner faces the right-to-life Republican Lori Chavez Delema.

However, one recent poll on abortion in Oregon found that most voters ranked abortion as the least important issue. This was done in January 2022 by a Portland-based DHM research company.

According to polls, 67% of Oregon citizens said abortion was very or somewhat important in the way they voted for the governor. It may seem like a lot, but it’s actually the lowest of all the problems they’ve been asked. Living expenses were the highest at 92%, followed by homeless people at 90%, medical care at 88%, and crime at 87%. Other issues ranked higher than abortion were COVID-19 at 79%, immigrants at 75%, racial justice at 73%, and climate change at 69%.

According to polls, only 2% of voters rated abortion as the most important issue when voting in the 2022 elections. This includes 1% of Democrats, 4% of Republicans, and 2% of minors and independent voters.

This is comparable to 22% of voters who rated living expenses as the most important issue, followed by homeless people at 12%, COVID-19 at 11% and economic inequality at 9%.

Polls have revealed the number of demographic differences. When assessing abortion at 68% and 70% as a very or somewhat important issue, men and women were roughly tied. However, rankings vary by party, stating that 85% of Democrats are only 62% of Republicans and 58% of minor and independent voters.

Results will also depend on race, age, education and place of residence.

John Horvick, co-founder of DHM Research, said national polls show that the Supreme Court’s ruling is likely to motivate supporters of abortion rights who are already democratic. But just as the problem is getting emotional, it’s still one of the things many voters are paying attention to.

“The point for me is that abortion is very likely to be a more important issue for voters this year, and it will probably motivate Democrats and left-wing voters rather than Republicans and right-wingers. Voters are motivated by many issues, especially living expenses, homelessness, and crime, and abortion is unlikely to be a decisive issue for so many voters, “Hobic said.
