People favored the beaches of Massachusetts on Saturday and wanted to be relieved on a hot weekend, but authorities are asking them to stay out of the water for the time being.

According to Deputy Commissioner Stephanie Cooper, DCR has hired lifeguards, but will not start staffing on the beach until Memorial Day weekend. And this weekend, the temperature on land reaches the 90’s, but the water is still very cold from winter.

“I tell people to pay close attention,” Cooper said. “We don’t encourage people to swim. We understand that it’s very attractive when it’s very hot.”

Boston has declared a fever emergency and has opened 15 cooling centers in the city. Cooper said residents can cool on the spray deck instead of the sea. According to experts, those who are outside on hot weekends should drink plenty of water, limit their activities to morning and evening hours, and use plenty of sunscreen.
