With summer travel about to hit its peak, TSA and Hawaii airports need more workers – Honolulu, Hawaii

Honolulu (KHON2) — Hawaii’s airports are likely to become very busy as the state prepares to relax travel restrictions. It happens when the airport and TSA need workers.

The TSA says it needs about 100 workers across the state, and the State Department of Transport says the airport needs an additional 200 workers across the state.

The state says airport traffic has increased since Memorial Day weekend.

On June 15, the state will lift restrictions on travel between islands, allowing vaccinated people in Hawaii to get an exception to the vaccine, which should allow more residents to travel. ..

“This summer may not be at 2019 levels, but we expect it to be pretty close. We’re definitely seeing it at every airport in Hawaii,” said a Hawaii Transport Department spokesman. Man, Jay Cunningham, said.

According to the state, tourism is now at 70% of its pre-pandemic level. At the peak of the travel season, it is difficult to have full staff at the airport. Daniel K. Inouye International Airport departs approximately 20,000 travelers daily.

“Therefore, we are trying to open all lanes,” said General Chan, TSA’s Director of Federal Security. “We have dogs to keep our operations efficient. Then we work with airlines to move passengers to the lowest routes.”

Authorities recommend arriving at the airport at least two hours early for inter-island flights and three hours early for mainland flights. The TSA should not bring food in when crossing the security line. This is because food screening takes time.

“If you carry food, be sure to take it out and put it in a separate box, which can speed up the process a bit,” says Chan.

She points out that airlines have changed their departure times on the mainland earlier, resulting in earlier daily peak hours at Honolulu airports. Therefore, long lines are usually from 9am to noon. The state says it will always coordinate with airlines to minimize waiting times.

“Therefore, there is constant work in planning, such as planning the plane to land on the ground, how to reach a particular gate, and which plane will turn back, so that’s a true art form.” Cunningham said.
