Spartanburg, South Carolina (WSPA) – Wofford College leaders say the proportion of vaccinated students is too low to return to social activities or large group gatherings. But since making that announcement on Friday, they have begun to increase in number.

Wofford College has a campus that Elijah Ball has called home for the last few years. When he looks back at some of his favorite memories, they all revolve around people.

“We are only surrounded by good people here,” said Elijah Ball, a Wofford student.

The same is true for Kit Lindsey.

“I just spend time with my friends. I used to meet in the pavilion and study with them,” said Woffford, a student at Kit Lindsey.

But until more students are vaccinated, it’s a moment of floating in the air. The school leader said in a presentation to the students that the class would meet in person and return. There is no remote option.

In addition, they are waiting to reopen the Greek village for social events and large rallies until at least 70% of the students are vaccinated.

“For those who are vaccinated and those who are not vaccinated, they chose not to do it, but for those who wear masks and follow the rules, it seems unfair that they also do not get together. “Linsey weighed. ..

A Wofford College spokesperson told Seven News, they have already begun to see more students uploading proofs of the COVID vaccine, and optimistic numbers will continue to grow.

When 7 News asked spokesmen if they needed a vaccine, they said they urged people to consider it.

Here is a complete statement from a Wofford College spokesperson:

“Wofford University is preparing to resume providing college-related experiences for students, faculty and staff. Last week, the campus community provided insights into the proportion of students, faculty and staff who submitted vaccination certificates. On weekends, the percentage of students submitting vaccination proofs increased by 8%. We resumed pre-pandemic activities and started grade 2021-22 and the community We look forward to everyone playing their part in maintaining their health. ”

The statement emailed to students on July 16 is as follows:

“The new school year will begin within 50 days. We are all excited about the orientation program, the newly refurbished Mungo Student Center and Burwell Building, and the potential for more social events in the Greek village of Stewart H. Johnson. ..

As of today, about 35% of students and 78% of faculty and staff have uploaded proof of COVID-19 vaccination. At this time, the proportion of vaccinated students is too low to return to social activities and large group gatherings, which are a very important part of Wofford’s experience. However, all classes and labs are held directly and remote learning options are not available. We are all responsible for the learner community, so consider how you can play your part.

Why get the vaccine now?

  • Delta variants are more contagious and affect more people in the 18-24 year range. COVID-19 shots have proven effective against this new strain of virus.
  • If more than 70% of a student’s body uploads a vaccination certificate, we can reopen the village of Stewart H. Johnson Greece for a social event and allow a large social gathering.
  • Students can win prizes (students who upload a COVID-19 vaccination certificate will be awarded a $ 25 $ 1,000 prize and a $ 5,000 prize in August). Staff who have uploaded the vaccine certificate will also be enrolled in the prize, including additional vacation days.
  • Vaccination means that students are much less likely to interrupt their academic, athletics, or social experience.
  • The larger Spartanburg community loves Wofford students and is grateful for their role in keeping the community safe.
  • Vaccinated students do not You will need to undergo the required weekly COVID-19 test.
  • The vaccine is safe! Here is the link to CDC science behind the shot.. “
