Woman found dead in Riverside refrigerator ID’d as retired L.A. County sheriff’s sergeant – Riverside, California

As investigations continued on Tuesday, an 87-year-old woman found dead in a refrigerator in a riverside home was identified as a former sergeant at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman, Miriam Travis, was a sergeant at the Sheriff’s Bureau of Murder. Press Enterprise First reported. Coroner, Riverside County, had not yet publicly identified the woman on Tuesday.

The Sheriff’s Office confirmed to KTLA that Travis, a 27-year veteran of the Department who retired in 1990, had died and that Riverside police were investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.

Investigations were conducted after police found the body in the garage refrigerator on Sunday after being asked for a welfare check at a 6600-block house in Newridge Drive.

According to riverside police officer Ryan Railsback, police officers spoke to the victim’s daughter, saying police replied “inconsistently” about her mother’s whereabouts and urged her to search her home.

A murder investigator was called to the scene and worked to determine how the woman died before being put in the fridge.

According to police, the unidentified daughter was detained for interrogation and then released.

A family member living on the east coast called the police to check the woman because the victim had not contacted her for several weeks.

“Our heart is broken by this news and the entire LASD family mourns her loss,” Sheriff Alex Villanueva said in a statement on Tuesday.

While at the Sheriff’s Office, Travis performed missions at the Civil Brand Women’s Institute, the Administrative Research Department, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department of Youth Detective and Youth Services.

Before retiring, she worked as a detective sergeant at the Sheriff’s Murder Department for 11 years, officials said.
