Woman killed in bear attack in SW Colorado while walking dogs is identified – Denver, Colorado

A 39-year-old woman was identified who was attacked and killed by a bear while walking her dog.

According to La Plata County coroner Jan Smith, Rainey Malabolta, who lived just north of Durango, died of a piercing neck injury. The method of death was determined to be an accident.

Mara Bolta Was walking her dog Friday night near her house when she was attacked. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Officer euthanized a female bear and a two-year-old horse after chasing them with a dog.

According to a Colorado Parks and Wildlife news release, the victim’s body was found around 9 pm on Friday by a boyfriend who began looking for her when he returned home from work. He found the two dogs safe at home and called 911 after finding the body of Malabolta from the US 550 near Trimble, north of Durango.

On Sunday night, CPW determined that there was a human body in the stomach of a mother bear and one bear cub.
