“Barbenheimer” is off to a hot start at the domestic box office.

Barbie, one half of the viral internet meme, racked up $22.3 million in Thursday night preview tickets, making it the highest-grossing film ever released in 2023, surpassing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.

Meanwhile, the R-rated three-hour film “Oppenheimer” grossed $10.5 million in Thursday’s showing. This comes alongside major releases such as 2017’s Wonder Woman and this year’s live-action The Little Mermaid.

for the weekend, Warner Bros. ‘ “Barbie” is expected to fetch more than $140 million, if not more, in its first three days of theatrical release. Meanwhile, Universal’s “Oppenheimer” seems destined for at least $50 million, with some box office analysts predicting it could top $60 million.

The two films together could generate $200 million in opening frames. Ticket sales for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Sound of Freedom have also been added, making it potentially the biggest box office weekend of the year so far.

The excitement is sorely needed for the domestic box office, as a string of recently released high-budget films such as “The Flash” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate” fell short of expectations.

The major movie chain said ticket sales for both films were strong this weekend, with additional screenings being added to meet demand.

Nearly 40,000 AMC theater loyalty program members have purchased tickets to see Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day, and the National Association of Theater Owners expects more than 200,000 moviegoers to attend the two films on the same day.
