Director Mario Misquez has been fighting cirrhosis for years, but has progressed rapidly in the past few months.
Many of his ex-players gathered this week for a final compliment.
They appeared in his front yard, chanting and running from practice to drama.
“They chanted them and prayed for him,” said Mario’s wife, Christine Misquez. “I said,’The boys are here for you,’ and he raised his arm.”
His wife describes it as a moving compliment.
Misquez spent most of his life on the football field-as both a player and a coach.
Manuel Martinez, interim head coach at Woodlake High School, said:
His ex-players share what they remember about their coaches.
“He was a great person. He brought a lot of smiles. He was a joke. As a bystander, he always hyped us,” said Chito, senior at Woodlake High School. Parafox said.
“He has always brought different kinds of energy to the team. One man you can count on to cheer us up,” said Isaya Nicholas, senior at Woodlake High School.
Mario is currently spending his last days at home-with close friends and family.
“I haven’t given up, I’m still praying for a miracle,” said Christine Misquez.
