Boston, Massachusetts 2021-01-12 19:18:03 –

Thousands of college students usually come to Worcester to resume their spring semester classes during this time.

But in the midst of the current coronavirus surge, health officials are calling for a delay.

“Returning when we are on the verge of a surge, I think the viral load in the community is much higher,” said Dr. Michael Hersch, director of medical care at Worcester.

Worcester State University recently decided to postpone the start of the spring semester to February 1.

“It was clearly the federal projected COVID rate that propelled the decision,” said Barry Maloney, President of Worcester State College.

WPI, who enrolled at Worcester State College, “keeps students in place” for the first two weeks, while postponing class start until January 28th.

In addition, Assumption University will start remotely for two weeks starting January 25, with tests and quarantine before students come directly to class.

“What we really want to do is create a bubble to stay safe on campus, but most importantly, keep the Worcester community safe,” said Francesco Chesa of Assumption University. President Leo said.

Presidential election Joe Biden introduced Dr. Miguel Cardona as his candidate to lead the Ministry of Education on Wednesday.

Holy Cross and Clark University planned a late start in the spring semester before the start of the academic year.

Jack Foley, Vice-President of Government and Community at Clark University, said, “It is recommended that medical institutions bring back students to contribute to the actual burden on the community in relation to the actual increase in medical capacity or virus. I can’t. “

Clark does not plan to start face-to-face lessons until February 22, but it still depends on the number of COVID-19 cases.

“And you’ll be able to see how it’s progressing at other schools that have opened earlier, and what their experience is,” Foley said.

The city’s universities say they will continue to monitor case levels across the region and adjust plans as needed.
