Ashland, KentuckyWOWK) — Efforts to quickly and conveniently vaccinate COVID-19 in a city in Kentucky are becoming more creative.

When thinking about a COVID-19 vaccination clinic, you might think about setting up a hospital or pharmacy.

But on Wednesday, the King’s Daughters Medical Center (KDMC) partnered with a local fast-food franchise to bring Pfizer shots to the hands of community-serving people.

McDonald’s in Ashland offers more than just a burger to do just that. Ashland, a city of about 22,000 people, is located on the northeastern border of Ohio.

“Today we are hosting a restaurant employee COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic,” said Becky Carpenter, McDonald’s local store marketing director, Wednesday.

Approximately 73,000 vaccinations have already been given by KDMC in the region, but this joint effort between the local McDonald’s franchise and KDMC aims to further boost the region’s immunity.

“Whatever the situation, whether it’s in the healthcare industry or the fast food industry, we aim to provide vaccines to people and make them accessible. KDMC Clinic Coordinator Says Bob Hammond.

McDonald’s employees say it is very beneficial to have a COVID-19 vaccination clinic in the restaurant lobby.

“It will definitely help. That is, the fact that you can come to work and get an opportunity there is absolutely because it’s already hard to go to the hospital itself and make an appointment to get a COVID shot. It’s great, “says employee Courtney Willett. At McDonald’s in Greenup.

In fact, employees say accessibility is a common barrier for people in the service industry who are trying to get vaccinated.

“I personally talk to friends who work at Wal-Mart, Aldi, etc., but I don’t think they have this opportunity, so I think a lot of people should do this. Where is their job? Also did not say, “Hey, you can go to this place and do it at this time.” They just said, “This will be a requirement, or you should do this, you have to find time to do it yourself”, and that is, it’s difficult! Willett says.

That’s why the McDonald’s lobby (not yet open to the public) is used for a bit of simplicity.

“The clinic is not only open to employees, but also contacts other restaurants in the Ashland / Boyd County area and invites unvaccinated employees to this free clinic today. I did, “says Carpenter.

The person who took the shot today seems to agree:

“That’s good, because I want to remove this mask from my face!” Says William Ferguson, an employee of McDonald’s in Cattlezberg.

The vaccination clinic lasted from 9 am to 5 pm.

If you miss it and still want to be vaccinated, KDMC will be hosting a Drive-Through Johnson & Johnson Clinic on June 21st at 2406 Carter Avenue in Ashland, Kentucky.

The clinic is open 7 days a week from 8 am to 5 pm.
