Wright Flyer facing wrong way – Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland, Ohio 2021-10-21 13:08:50 –

Columbus, Ohio (WCMH) — Ohio’s new license plate “celebrates our past,” said Governor Mike Dewein. Before announcing on Thursday morning.. But if you look closely, there are strange historical inaccuracies.

Standing at the top of the plate is the first plane of the Wright brothers from Ohio, with a red flag that says “The Birthplace of Aviation.” The banner is flowing in a way that indicates that the plane is flying to the left.

The problem with that is that the plane is flying in the wrong direction.

When Orville and Wilbur Wright first flew Wright Flyer In 1903, it was the first sustained flight by what is now considered an airplane on the beach in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. One may look instinctively because of the way modern planes fly Wright Flyer I think the short, chunky end is the rear.

But for the Dayton brothers’ famous plane, the chunky end was the front, as seen in this replica from a 2003 demonstration in North Carolina.

NBC4 contacted a spokesman for the Ohio Automobile Department on Thursday, but has not yet responded.

According to a commentary video from the North Carolina Transportation Museum, Orville Wright lay on his wings and used wires to control the direction of the aircraft. The tail of the plane is the tall part behind the pilot’s foot, unlike what is shown on the new Ohio license plate. This rudder controls left and right movement.

Ohio license plates seem to be mistaken for the “elevator,” which is the two horizontal parts that control the height of the plane.

“To change altitude”, the host explains in the video above, the pilot moves the “tilt the elevator to send the plane up and down” handle.

Wright made his first sustained flight on a beach in North Carolina after his first work and testing in Dayton. North Carolina claims to be “first in-flight” on one of the standard license plates above its silhouette. Flyer..

One of North Carolina’s standard-issued license plates included a silhouette of the Wright brothers’ plane, stating that the state was “first in-flight” because the plane first flew in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. (Photo via www.theus50.com/Wikimedia Commons)
