The property on 551 Ponce de Leon Avenue has been numerous since it was first built in 1929. It was the Garner Wallace Hotel and Ponce Student Suites. It was even the hometown of MJQ’s first place. In early 2021, it will be reborn as the Wiley Hotel.
The Wiley Hotel is a main sail lodging and development project whose portfolio includes real estate in Florida and the British Virgin Islands. The mainsale was attracted to this particular property because it means the Old Fourth Ward location is close to Ponce City Market and the Beltline Eastside Trail, says General Manager Alan Ray. Ray is familiar with the chic in-town refurbished boutique hotel that opened Hotel Clermont in 2018.
Mrs. P once lived in the basement of the building. An LGBT friendly restaurant that became a gay leather and western bar in the late 1960s. Wiley Hotel is planning an underground restaurant called Mrs. P’s Barand Kitchen that serves Southern cuisine. Ray says future programming offered at the hotel may pay more respect to the history of the building. “I’m not talking about the exact details, but I’m thinking of focusing on branches. [for the restaurant]And Mrs. P is in the basement of the building, doing something that represents the previous history of hosting Atlanta’s first drug show, “says Ray. “So we expect it to be potentially a bit flashy but definitely fun.”
The developers have completely refurbished the 111-room property with a new look that Ray says is classic and attractive, with a color palette of shades such as blue, blush, clay, “green velvet” and “sour cream”. I will. Each room has its own personality. The hotel also features touch-free check-in and the Intelity app, which allows you to “control the experience” by guessing.
“Well, there’s no club in the basement at first,” Ray laughs about how Wiley differs from the nearby Hotel Clermont. “We would like to describe it as a more sophisticated sister of Hotel Clermont. It will be a little more homely and more livable.”
