Forget about drunk driving – The new drunk driving test requires you to wear an ear defender.

Tohma Cozy At Tokyo Medical and Dental University in Japan, his colleague created a device that captures alcohol released from the skin of the human ear. It can measure the amount of alcohol in their blood and whether they exceed legal limits.

Drinking test alcohol When used by many police, the device needs to be steadily blown for a few seconds, and some argue that this is unmanageable or unmanageable. Skin-based testing solved both problems. “They can’t cheat through their skin,” says Tohma.

Tohma and his team had previously considered using palm skin to measure blood alcohol, but ears are not better because of their large surface area, thin skin, and few sweat glands. I thought. The result is too variable. “If the signal isn’t stable, we can’t estimate the concentration properly,” says Tohma.

Researchers have modified a pair of ear defenders to allow airflow to enter and exit them. The three men wore the device to their ears for 140 minutes while drinking alcoholic beverages and also underwent regular drinking tests. The air leaving the device was sent to the ethanol vapor sensor.

The team found that earmuff measurements showed rising and falling alcohol levels similar to alcohol detectors, but with a 13-minute delay.

Tohma says that if someone wears the device for a one-time reading, such as when they suspect drunk driving, they need to turn on the ear defender for 30 seconds. Long hair should be extruded out of the way.

The team is currently developing ideas for other medical applications that help continuous reading of blood levels of biochemicals, such as measuring a compound called acetone that indicates the amount of fat burned during exercise.
