Best Organic Mattresses & Bedding 2025: Natural Non-Toxic Sleep

The only gripe with the plush version is that it does not have a strap (the standard does not, but I have not tested that). Even if it doesn’t slide off-stays in place, thanks to the cotton cover-the corners sometimes get bunched up when you’re changing the sheets and have to be smoothed out. The best organic sheets. rests instantly on your skin. Here are some of our favorite organic sheets for your new organic mattress topper. For more options, check out our guides to the Best Overall Sheets, Best Cooling Sheets, Best Bamboo Sheets, and Best Linen Sheets. All prices listed here are for queen sizes unless otherwise indicated. Soft Cotton Sheets These are the best organic cotton sheets we’ve tested. They are soft, but not overly silky, which I don’t care for (if you do, check out the Avocado sheets below). Brooklinen organic cotton sheets are made from GOTS certified organic cotton. They are also Oeko-Tex certified, meaning they have been tested and do not contain any known toxic chemicals. The 300 thread count keeps these dry and soft but not so tight that you sleep hot. This is a great option for summer or if, like me, you sleep on the warm side even in winter. Somehow, they are actually 100 percent GOTS certified organic cotton from India. The only potential problem here is that, due to the dense weave, they sleep a little warmer than they are used to. Avocado also has a 400-count version that I haven’t tested yet, but it might be a better choice for a warm sleep. Soft, Crisp Hotel Style Sheets I first tried the Antipodean wool blanket (see next section), which I loved, but I broke up. began to sleep on the sheet and was quite sure that it was very good. They remind me of the sheets you will find in high-end hotels – nice crisp, soft, clean white sheets. Like the organic cotton sheets here, these are naturally hypoallergenic. It’s made from ultrafine, long-staple organic cotton, with a weave that’s on the heavier side giving it weight. Everything Antipodean makes is sustainably grown on low-impact farms that practice regenerative farming methods. It is also breathable. I haven’t slept in the real heat with them, but so far they’ve been good on nights where I just needed a bed sheet. Linen Sheets Organic linen sheets are a potential heirloom purchase—high-quality, well-cared for—for the linen will last for years, if not decades. That said, if you’re used to 600-count cotton like the sheets above, linen sheets are, well, different. Harder, even with every wash (cold water, mild detergent, cool or dry). What hasn’t changed is the weight. If you like heavy covers, this is the sheet for you. Linen is also more breathable and cooler than other fabrics, making it a good choice for hot sleepers. It is also durable. Avocado organic linen sheets are some of the heaviest I’ve tried and will last for years. The bottom sheet is fitted (sometimes a flat linen sheet set), and there is a matching duvet cover ($439). A Beautiful Organic Wool Duvet To complete your collection of organic bedding you need a beautiful organic duvet. My favorite that I have tested is the Antipodean organic merino wool blanket. As one of the authors of the merino wool guide, I was also primed to like the Antipodean wool blanket, but even I was surprised by just how much I like it. Like most woolen items, Antipodean wool blankets can do some amazing feats, like keeping you warm, but breathable enough that you rarely overheat. (I sleep hot, and I can vouch for this.) Wool can do this because it is what is known as an active fiber—that is, it reacts to changes in body temperature and the environment at that time. there is insulating and warming and cooling sheep. The result is a blanket that gives me some of the best sleep I’ve ever had. One thing to note, this blanket is heavier than what people are used to. I don’t think so, but sometimes it feels almost like a heavy blanket. Organic Pillows We have all the instructions for pillows, but we will add some organic options here, because if you try to get rid of phthalates and other chemicals, your pillow is as important as your mattress. The top organic choice in our pillow guide, the best part about the Avocado Green Pillow is how easy it is to make. change it. For example, I hate soft pillows; I like pillows that are almost flat. So, I just opened the avocado pillow, pulled out half of it (my son used it to make sock puppets), and finally had the pillow of my dreams. My son, who likes oversized pillows, took some of the extra stuffing that Avocado gave me and stuffed it into his pillow. Everyone wins. The content here is GOLS certified organic latex shreds and GOTS certified organic kapok. The quilted organic cotton cover is nice and soft and not too hot. I’ve had mine for four years now and it’s just as good as the day I got it. How We Test and What to Look for in Organic Mattresses Mattresses are big, and testing is time- and space-consuming. Members of the WIRED Gear team have been testing mattresses for years, and we’ve slept on every mattress on this list for at least a few weeks, often longer—in many cases, years. That said, there is no way to test everything. Here are some general tips, tricks, and things to look for when shopping for organic mattresses online.Know What Type of Sleeper You Are: Different mattresses are designed for different sleeping styles. Are you a side sleeper? Sleepy stomach? A sleeper? Or are you like me, a little bit of everything (which they call a combination sleeper)? Knowing the answer to this question can help you narrow down your search to the perfect mattress for your sleeping habits. This is where mattress reviews like ours come in handy; we try for every type of sleeper. Do You Like Firm, Soft, Medium? Mattresses are available in different firmness options, often in the same model. Whichever one is right for you depends on the firmness you like, as well as any problems, like back pain. Innerspring vs Foam: Organic mattresses come in two basic flavors: traditional innerspring coil design and pure foam. We’ve mainly tested and recommended innersprings in this guide, although pure foam designs have improved in recent years, and we’re currently testing a few. The big difference in my experience is the amount of heat the foam holds. It’s a good choice for cold sleepers, while hot sleepers are better off with a traditional pocket coil design. Find a Trial Period: Everyone makes mistakes; to avoid having to live with potential mistakes, make sure the mattress you’re considering offers a sleep test. Everything listed here offers some kind of trial period for sleeping, and if you don’t like it, you can return the mattress. More expensive doesn’t mean better: Organic mattresses aren’t cheap, but that’s no reason to waste money. for a good night’s sleep and is environmentally friendly. Check the Warranty: Lifetime warranties are rare these days, but most mattresses we’ve tested offer around a 25-year warranty. Some companies close for 10 years, but look suspiciously. A good mattress should last more than 10 years, and a good company is willing to stand behind its product for that long. Expect Sales: Mattresses go on sale, usually every few months for most brands. Unless you need a new mattress now, you might be better off waiting for the next big sale. What Makes an Organic Mattress? To help you navigate the often confusing world of organic mattresses, here are some terms and certifications to be aware of. .The big name in organic certification, and organic cotton certification in particular is the Global Organic Textile Standard, commonly abbreviated as GOTS. It looks not only at how the cotton is grown and processed but also at the ecological and social criteria, and uses a third party to independently verify that the standards have been met. If you are interested, you can read version 6 of the standard online.
