TikTok ban: How to download videos and data

The Supreme Court has overturned the ban on TikTok. Before the app goes dark on Sunday, you might be wondering how to back up the tens, hundreds, or even thousands of videos you have on the platform. Whether you want to save your favorite videos or videos you’ve posted yourself, here’s how to do it. And we’ve rounded up some TikTok alternatives if you’re starting to panic. How to download individual TikTok content If you want to save some of your favorite TikTok videos or photos to your device, it’s quite easy. To download a video on your iOS or Android device, open your TikTok profile page, select the video you want, and tap the Share button on the right side of the screen. Then, select “Save video.” You can download photos in the same way. However, it should be noted that creators can control whether others can download their content. This means that some videos from the Like, Repost, or Bookmark tabs may not have a download option. If you have a lot of videos to download, this process can take a lot of time, as you have to repeat this step for each video. There are various third-party apps available that allow bulk downloads, but reliability can vary, so use caution. How to get TikTok data You can also request a copy of TikTok data, which may include your username, view history, comment log, and privacy settings. However, TikTok warns that not all data can be downloaded, “especially if it affects the privacy of others,” the company wrote on its support page. To get your TikTok information, navigate to your profile, tap the Menu button at the top to access Settings, then go to Account. Select “Download your data” to select the data you want to include in the downloadable file and select the file format: TXT or JSON. Finally, tap “Request data.” After you submit a request, TikTok compiles a data file that can be downloaded from the application. Note that it may take a few days to prepare the file, but TikTok will notify you when it’s ready to download. Given the potential ban coming this Sunday, we suggest you do this as soon as possible. When the file is ready, tap download in the app. It will be available for up to four days.
