RED RIVER, N.M. — Three people were killed and five injured in a shooting late Saturday afternoon at an annual motorcycle rally in the New Mexico town, the mayor said.
Red River Mayor Linda Calhoun said in a video posted on Facebook that three people were killed in the shooting around 5 p.m. and five victims were taken to hospitals in Denver, Albuquerque and nearby Taos. Stated.
About 20,000 bikers flocked to town for the 41st annual Red River Memorial Motorcycle Rally, Calhoun said.
Calhoun said the violence took place between two retailers and involved gang members.
“All the shooters have been arrested,” she said. “There is absolutely no threat to the community.”
New Mexico police said in a tweet earlier that two people were killed and six others injured in the shooting.
Calhoun said in a statement that much of Red River’s Main Street, where the shooting took place, was closed to the public due to an investigation, and law enforcement asked businesses in the area to remain closed on Sunday. Stated.
“Our number one priority is the safety and welfare of our local communities,” Calhoun said. “We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we navigate this very difficult time together.”
Some of the victims were being treated at the Holy Cross Hospital in Taos, about 30 miles southeast of the Red River. State Police said on Twitter that the Taos Police Department and the Taos County Sheriff’s Office secured the hospital.
One victim was airlifted to a Denver hospital, state police said.
The victim was also taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital secured by the Albuquerque Police Department, KRQE reported.
Taos Mayor Pascual Maestas issued an emergency declaration, imposing a curfew on the town from 10pm Saturday to 4am Sunday, and an immediate ban on alcohol sales.
