8 people killed in shooting in “city center'' near Mexico resort
Eight people were killed in a weekend shooting spree in Mexico's Morelos state, which borders Mexico City, authorities said Sunday.
The attack occurred Saturday in the city of Huitzilak, off the highway that connects the capital to the tourist city of Cuernavaca.
Four people died at the scene, and four others died after being taken to hospital. This was announced by the Morelos State Prosecutor's Office.. Seven of the victims ranged in age from 29 to 50, and the identity of the eighth victim was not immediately known.
All eight bodies were taken to a forensic facility as the investigation into the shooting continues, officials said.
The forested mountain town of Huitzilac is beset by illegal loggers, kidnappers and drug gangs, in part because it's Mexico's closest rural retreat to the capital.
The town's mayor, Rafael Vargas, called the attack a “horrific act of violence.”
“Several people were attacked and killed in the center of town,” Vargas said. Apparently aware of the town's bad reputation, he added: “The violence must stop. We condemn all kinds of slander aimed at harming our residents.”
