The White House said: joe biden We have consulted with federal, state, and local authorities as part of our ongoing response to the bridge collapse.

Those officials included U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Wes Moore, Democratic Governor of Maryland. Two Democratic U.S. senators from Maryland, Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin. and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott.

Moore told reporters that the bridge, built in 1977, was “fully encrypted” before it was struck by the ship.

However, in 2016, the same ship was involved in an accident in the Belgian port of Antwerp when it collided with a quay while attempting to leave a North Sea container terminal.

A subsequent inspection of Dali in San Antonio, Chile, on June 27 found that the ship had defects in its “propulsion system and auxiliary machinery,” according to data from Equasis, a public website that provides information about ships. It turns out that something happened. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the meters and thermometers were defective. A spokesperson for Dali's owner declined to comment on the report.

Kevin Cartwright, director of public affairs for the Baltimore Fire Department, said officers received a call around 1:30 a.m. that a boat sailing from Baltimore had struck a pillar on the bridge, causing the bridge to collapse. Several vehicles were parked on the bridge at the time, including one the size of a tractor-trailer.

Officials issued a mayday after the ship appeared to have veered off course and lost power, which Baltimore officials said prevented more vehicles from entering the bridge. The ship then appeared to be on fire as part of the bridge collapsed on top of it and thick black smoke spewed into the air.

Water temperatures in the river early Tuesday were about 47 degrees Fahrenheit (8 degrees Celsius), according to buoys collecting data for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

From a vantage point near the bridge entrance, the jagged remains of the bridge's steel frame could be seen poking out of the water, and the ascent ended abruptly where the span once began.

“Due to an accident on the I-695 Key Bridge, all lanes are closed in both directions. Traffic is being detoured,” the Maryland Transportation Authority posted on X. “I-695 Key Bridge Collapses Due to Ship Collision. Active Scene,” it later added.

Biden said Tuesday afternoon in the Roosevelt Room of the White House. There are no other signs at this time. There is no other reason to believe there was an intentional act here. ”

biden The U.S. federal government has promised to pay the full cost of rebuilding the Baltimore bridge, which also shut down the country's major port.

“It is my intention that the federal government pay the full cost of rebuilding the bridge, and I hope that Congress will support my efforts,” the president said.

“They are all hard-working and humble people,” said Jesús Campos, who described himself as a collaborator of the victims.

Meanwhile, Biden has promised to travel to Baltimore soon. “I'm not leaving until this job is finished,” he said.

Asked why the government should pay and not the Singapore-flagged ship's owner, Grace Ocean, Biden said: “That's a possibility, but we're not going to wait until that happens. We're going to pay to get it rebuilt and open.”
