Three Atlanta police officers shot dead after responding to call about armed man

Three Atlanta police officers were shot and wounded Saturday night after responding to a call about an armed man, authorities said. The suspect died during the encounter.

The incident occurred around 5:15 p.m. local time, and police officers were dispatched to Atlanta's Capitol View neighborhood after a caller reported a man with a weapon who they felt was a threat to the community, according to Atlanta Police Chief Sgt. When officers arrived on scene, they found a suspect armed with a handgun and a knife, Schierbaum said.

“During that encounter, there was a struggle and gunfire resulted in injuries to three of our officers,” Seelbaum said. “As a result, the individual in possession of the handgun was also killed.”

The officers were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. One person suffered a wound to the shoulder, one person had a wound to the leg and the third person had “abrasions,” Schielbaum said. Two of the three have undergone surgery.

“They are alive, stable, conscious and breathing,” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said at a news conference outside the hospital.

Two of the injured officers are 31-year-olds, both four-year veterans of the department, and the third is a 28-year-old who has been with the department for five months, Schierbaum said.

It's unclear exactly where the shooting occurred or what happened. Officers were initially called to a commercial area, Schielbaum said.

The officer's name was not immediately released. The suspect's name has also not been released.

Schierbaum said all officer-involved shootings are investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, following agency policy.
