‘Everybody’s at stake’: Four unsolved murders hit Idaho college town | Idaho
C.Christmas is approaching, but an eerie and decidedly non-festive mood haunts the snowy university town of Moscow. IdahoLocksmith’s vans have replaced mobile carolers. Some ask for pepper spray and guns as Christmas gifts. Few people walk alone, especially at night.
It’s been over a month since four local college students were mysteriously stabbed to death in the same house, but the case remains unsolved and the murderer or murderers are on the run. Police have not identified a suspect, found no weapon, or provided a motive.
The streets of Moscow are uncomfortably empty, as are the classrooms at the University of Idaho, the largest employer. Many of his 11,000 students at the university left town shortly after the murders. Others who went out for Thanksgiving apparently refused to go back.
Moscow, a city of 25,000 people near the border of Idaho and Washington, is no stranger to crime. Residents tend not to lock their doors. Until November, there had been no murders in seven years.
Now this area feels like a garrison. FBI agents and state police have been deployed to augment the Moscow police force of 31 officers looking for clues. We did, but so far the case has grown, not scaled back.
Despite describing the attack as “targeted,” Moscow police chief James Fry Jr. was forced to acknowledge the potential for greater danger. “I can’t say there are no threats to the community,” he told reporters.
A resident who usually lives alone stays at a friend’s house. They lock the bedroom door and the exterior door.
The manager of a local store, Tri-State Outfitters, refused to tell The Guardian if gun sales had increased since the killings. It is confirmed that I asked if they sold styled military knives.
Police have been bombarded with over 5,000 pieces of information, many of which are baseless. Other hints were true, including one about the skinned corpse of a pet dog, but police say, irrelevant to murder.
Moscow Police Lieutenant Roger Lanier recently said that an Internet probe was exacerbating wild rumors. The victim’s family was subsequently harassed and received death threats. On his Moscow Murders Reddit forum, he already has over 78,000 members.
“It’s pretty bizarre and sad, highlighted by this tragedy in our small town,” said Bailey Kidd, a 2019 graduate of the University of Idaho. Said Idaho politician. “I can see that everyone is nervous.”
If Moscow feels strangely quiet, there’s no quieter, sadder place than the pale vinyl-sided house on King Road, not far from the Greek Row sorority and sorority houses. Until Sunday, November 13, the tenancy had five of his residents and was known to throw parties.
That Sunday, police responded to reports that someone was unresponsive: Ethan Chapin, 20; ) was found dead.
Goncalves, Kernodle and Mogen lived in the house. Chapin was dating Kernodle. All four attended the University of Idaho.
One night, a person or people murdered four students with a large knife or blade, presumably while they were asleep. There was no evidence of forced entry. Two other housemates, whom police do not consider suspects, were all asleep.
County coroner Kathy Mabat said there was no evidence of murder-suicide or sexual assault. She also said some of the victims had defensive wounds that indicated they had woken up and tried to fight back.
Built against the hillside, the King Road house was a quirky three-story design. The two surviving housemates slept on the first floor.
“I have no idea who did this or why they did this to Kayleigh,” said Jordyn Quesnel, a friend of Cary Gonsalves. Said New York Times. She and her Goncalves were planning to move to Austin, Texas next year and were excited to see more of the world outside of her hometown of Idaho.
A native of Rathdrum, Idaho, Gonsalves has been friends with Morgen since sixth grade. A marketing student at Coeur d’Alene, his Mogen was helping local restaurants create social media plans. She and Carnodol were waitresses there.
Born in Idaho and raised in Arizona, Carnodle is an independent spirit, her family says. She was “positive, funny, and loved by everyone who met her,” says her sister, Jazmine Carnodol. Said New York Times. “She made me a big sister to be proud of. I wish she could have spent more time with her.”
Chapin was a high school basketball player from Washington state. He was a triplet and spent part of the Saturday before his death with his brother, who was also a student at the university. “My kids are so grateful to have spent quality time with him,” said his mother, Stacey Chapin. Said Times. “He made everyone laugh. He was just the nicest person.”
The victim was closely tied. The day before he passed away, Goncalves posted a photo of everyone on his Instagram. Their friends and family can’t understand how an ordinary Saturday night turned into such a tragedy.
‘We don’t want people to make assumptions about our kids,’ says Stacey Chapin Said Idaho politician. “It wasn’t the drugs, it wasn’t the passion between these kids. Someone entered the house.”
Saturday started off without incident with the University of Idaho football game. It’s always a big event in college towns. Chapin and Kernodle later went to a flat party, Goncalves and Mogen visited a bar, and all four were home by 2am.
Back home, Goncalves and Morgen made numerous calls to Goncalves’ ex-boyfriend, Jacques Ducourt, who lived nearby, but he did not answer the phone.
DuCoeur was not named as a person of interest, and Goncalves’ family says she often called friends late at night. Her older sister, Alivea Goncalves, said that she and her family “support Jack 100% of what she is and know he has nothing to do with this.”
On Sunday, November 14, a resident of the home called a friend, apparently concerned that another housemate was not responding. It was only around noon that they called the police.
The police arrived and found people gathered around the house and crying. There was “a lot of blood” inside, coroner said – photos of house obtained by Fox News reportedly showed trails of blood leaking from the outer wall.
News about survey drift has been sporadic.
Police are investigating information that some of Goncalves’ friends heard her talk about the stalker, but have so far been unable to confirm it. I found out that Ka had threatened a student with a knife on campus.
Last week, police said they were looking for information about a white Hyundai Elantra that was near the victim’s home around the time he died. Police said there was They are also processing DNA information from crime scenes.
It can take weeks or even months to analyze everything. “I sent her daughter to college to get her education,” said Goncalves’ father, Steve Goncalves. Said soon. “She came back in a box.”
