Floods and landslides kill at least 14 people on Indonesia's Sulawesi island
At least 14 people have been killed in flooding and landslides on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, authorities said Saturday.
Heavy rains that have hit the region since Thursday caused landslides in Luwu district, South Sulawesi province, local rescue chief Messianus Bekabel said.
Water and mud covered the area, with flooding of up to 3 meters (10 feet) affecting 13 sub-districts. More than 1,000 homes were damaged, 42 of which had their foundations washed away.
Search and rescue teams tried to evacuate residents using rubber boats and other equipment. National Disaster Management Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari said on Saturday that more than 100 residents had been moved to mosques or relatives' homes outside the affected area.
Indonesia is made up of 17,000 islands, where seasonal heavy rains frequently cause landslides and floods, and millions of people live in mountainous areas and fertile floodplains.
