Football star Ali Krieger announces retirement
Football star Ali Krieger, known for his impressive defensive skills and leadership on and off the field, announced Thursday on CBS Morning that he is retiring from professional football.
“This is the right time for me,” she said. “I gave the game a lot and got a lot in return. But I feel it. My body feels it too.”
Krieger has been an integral part of US women’s soccer for over a decade, making over 100 appearances for the US Women’s National Team. She currently plays for Gotham FC, a member of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), and she plans to retire at the end of the league’s season.
In her final season, she has one last chance to win the title she missed out on.
“We see the 2023 season as an opportunity to celebrate with our fans and fellow players, but we are absolutely focused on winning the NWSL Championship with Gotham FC,” Krieger said in a news release.
“Achieving this in front of the incredible Gotham FC fans will be our daily motivation this season,” she said.
Krieger has a long list of accolades. Before joining Gotham FC in 2021, she played five seasons with Orlando Pride and four with Washington Her Spirit, leading her to the NWSL Championship her game in 2016. She has been named her NWSL Best XI.
She also played a key role in the US Women’s National Team’s victory at the 2015 and 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cups.In 2016, she made an appearance for Team USA at the Rio Olympics.
Outside the field, Krieger advocates for equal pay and the LGBTQ+ community. What she’s most proud of, she said, is her impact off the field.
“I want to leave the game in better shape than I found it,” Krieger said.
Krieger is married to professional soccer player Ashlynn Harris, who announced her retirement from professional football last year. The two met while she was playing for the US Women’s National Team over a decade ago, and now she has two young children.
Krieger said he is looking forward to spending more time with his family and is looking forward to waking up with the kids, spending the day together, and then working out a schedule where they can go to bed.
“It’s the kind of time that we really cherish as mothers,” she said.
