On Sunday, a police officer shot dead a wanted man in the nearby four murders over the weekend. Atlanta A sheriff’s deputy and two police officers who were trying to detain the suspect were wounded in a shootout, officials said.

officials said. Andre Longmore A 40-year-old suspect was shot dead during an intense search. The shootout comes a day after Saturday morning’s shootings shook the idyllic neighborhood of the Hamptons, south of Georgia’s main city.

Officials said Longmore was killed in the suburb of Jonesboro, about 15 miles (25 kilometers) north of Hampton. A Henry County sheriff’s deputy found the SUV Longmore had stolen from one of his victims and began chasing him for help, Clayton County Police said. Clayton Police said Longmore fled after the shootout.

Justin Robinson told WANF-TV that Longmore entered the townhouse backyard.

“He had a gun, he was bleeding and he was naked,” Robinson said.

Robinson said he reported that police officers entered the townhouse where Longmore was hiding and were greeted with gunshots.

“As soon as we opened the back door, the man started shooting and shot at the officer,” Robinson said. “Police opened fire.”

A Henry County sheriff’s deputy and two Clayton County police officers were injured in an attempt to arrest Longmore, officials said.

A police officer was shot in the back and taken to hospital by helicopter. Atlanta Trauma Center, Henry County Sheriff Reginald Scandlet said. “At the moment he is conscious, breathing and talking,” Scandlet said of the officer.

Clayton County Police Chief Kevin Roberts said all three officers are expected to recover. Details about the condition of the other two injured officers were not immediately released.

Hampton Police Chief James Turner said all four people killed on Saturday were residents of the same Dogwood Lakes neighborhood where Longmore lived and were all shot within 10 minutes. He identified the victims as Scott Leavitt, 67, and his wife, Shirley Leavitt, 66, Steve Blizzard, 65, and Ronald Jeffers, 66.

Authorities were seeking to arrest Longmore under the four murder warrants that killed him. Turner said Longmore’s motives are still under investigation.

Turner earlier told reporters that detectives were investigating at least four crime scenes at Dogwood Lakes. At least three police cars staked out the neighborhood on Sunday, restricting access. Located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of downtown Atlanta, he has about 40 houses on two streets on either side of the lake.

The Hamptons are home to the Atlanta Motor Speedway, Georgia’s racetrack for NASCAR events. Turner said the most recent murder in the town of 8,000 before Saturday was in 2018. “It’s not normal for us,” he said.

The shooting is the 31st mass murder of 2023 and has claimed at least 153 lives this year, according to a database maintained by the Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University. A mass murder is a murder in which four or more people are killed.

Hampton Mayor Ann Tarpley said the city will hold a vigil Monday night for the four victims and their loved ones.

“We are rooting for them and will continue to support them throughout their bereavement,” Tarpley said.
