Apple released new figures on Friday, highlighting the user adoption of iOS 18. Released in general form in September 2024, the mobile operating system is now installed on 68% of compatible devices. That number rose to 78% on iPhones released in the past four years. For the remaining iPhones, 19% use iOS 17, and 13% use the previous version. In addition, 19% of iPhones released in the last four years are now running iOS 17. This figure drops to 5% with previous iOS builds – understandable, given the overall percentage of devices shipped with iOS 17 or 18, along with the initial ones. the propensity of adopters to keep their devices running the latest OS updates. As 9 to 5 Mac shows, the figures shown are the same as those published by Apple in 2024 regarding the adoption of iOS 17. The company’s small model approach to generative AI, Apple Intelligence, is the marquee feature for iOS 18. That comes with the first major update of the operating system, 18.1 , with additional features coming with 18.2. The current public version is 18.2.1. Of course, Apple Intelligence has had some stumbles out of the gate, including one that required the company to replay the News notification summary. The adoption rate of iPadOS 18, is lower than its mobile counterpart. Currently, 53% of all iPads are running iPadOS 18. This figure has increased to 63% for those released in the last four years.
