Jan. 6 Capitol mob conspired to kill federal agent, court records show
Newly sealed court documents show a Tennessee man has been arrested for his involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021 incident. Riot He also conspired with another to kill dozens of federal agents involved in the investigation.
Earlier this year, 33-year-old Edward Kelly was one of many mobsters arrested for trespassing the United States Capitol and assaulting a police officer.
According to the FBI, Kelly then discussed plans with 26-year-old Austin Carter to kill the law enforcement officers involved in his criminal investigation and drew up a list of targets. A witness provided the local Tennessee Police Department with a list of his 37 names on Tuesday, according to court records.
Kelly and Carter discussed intelligence gathering and planning with law enforcement officers on a list that was also included in the FBI’s Knoxville field office.
“You guys are taking them out to their offices,” said Kelly, recorded by an unidentified witness on Wednesday. “What you and Austin have to do is recruit as many people as possible. , to call people in need and attack their offices.”
Kelly said when a witness asked if the attack took place at his Knoxville office.
Carter later told a witness, “This is the time to total or put up,” “just to make sure we racked, locked, and loaded everything.”
Kelly’s attorneys in Tennessee and Washington, DC did not immediately respond to CBS News’ requests for comment.
In a statement, FBI Director Christopher Wray said Said “Allegations that an individual has attacked, injured, or attempted to kill an FBI employee are offensive,” he said.
Both Kelly and Carter appeared in court in Knoxville on Friday before U.S. Magistrate Jill E. McCook. They have been charged with conspiracy, reprisal against federal officials, interstate communication of threats, and solicitation of violent crimes.
“Federal law enforcement puts their lives on the line every day to protect the public,” Federal Attorney Francis M. Hamilton III told WATE-TV on Friday. “Planning and threatening violence against them is one of the most serious crimes. It is absolutely unacceptable and will be vigorously investigated and prosecuted.”
The two men are scheduled for a preliminary hearing on January 3. Meanwhile, Carter’s detention hearing is scheduled for his December 21st.
On Friday, the famous U.S. Capitol riot declared to five years in prison for his role in the January 6 riots. His QAnon conspiracy theorist Doug Jensen, from Iowa, said: convicted of seven federal counts. He was first accused of breaking into the Capitol, before a mob who chased US Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman up the steps of the Capitol. Prosecutors called Jensen a “riot poster boy.”
More than 880 people have been charged with crimes related to the Jan. 6 attacks, according to the Justice Department.
