Michigan State University shooting: 3 dead, 5 injured, gunman dead, police say
Three people were killed and several injured in a shooting at Michigan State University Monday night. The suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said at a press conference around 12:30 a.m.
“There are no more threats on campus,” said Deputy Police Chief Chris Rozman.
Police previously issued a shelter-in-place order in East Lansing, Michigan, following reports of gunshots being fired on campus. The shelter has now been lifted.
Michigan State Police said three people were confirmed dead, in addition to the five people who were taken to hospital. Some injuries were described as life-threatening.
Rosman said two of the victims died at Barkey Hall on campus and a third at the MSU Union.
The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound outside the Michigan State University campus, police said. Officials said they were working to confirm his identity.They said they did not know what his motives were.
Authorities previously described the suspect as a black man, short in stature, wearing red shoes, a jean jacket and a ball cap, and released photos of the suspect.
The victim was taken to Sparrow Hospital, MSU police said.
Police said they received the first 911 call reporting a shooting at Barkey Hall on the East Lansing campus around 8:18 p.m. Another shooting occurred in the nearby Union Building shortly afterward, and police and EMS tended to victims at the scene as well. was not involved, police said.
At a news conference Monday night, Rosman said there had been an “overwhelming law enforcement response.”
The alert, sent just after 8:30 p.m. local time, urged people to “flee, hide, and fight.” According to CBS Detroit.
Local state officials warned residents not to go to campus. “Don’t go to MSU right now. Yes, it’s difficult when you have loved ones on or adjacent to campus. VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE THEY ARE TRYING TO TAKE YOU… IN custody.” Michigan Police District 2 Posted on Twitter.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said he was “reported about the shooting at Michigan State University.”
“Michigan State Police and MSU Police, local law enforcement and first responders are on the scene.” Whitmer posted on social media. “Get your hands on the Spartan community tonight. We’ll keep everyone updated as more details become available.”
MSU said, “All campus activities have been canceled for 48 hours, including athletics, classes, and all campus-related activities. Please do not come to campus tomorrow.
